Before the Cowboys gained his rights, Neely signed with the Oilers. He returned his check to the Oilers and joined the Cowboys, and the Oilers continued. The teams settled the lawsuit in 1966 as part of the NFL-AFL merger. Neely played until 1977, appearing in five Super Bowls and winning two rings.
The Cowboys’ Super Bowl XII victory over the Broncos was the last game of Neely’s career. He won all rookies praise, three AllPro first-team awards and twice won the Pro Bowl. Neely has played on the right for his first five seasons and on the left for the last eight. He ranks eleventh in Cowboys history with 168 games started.
